Artist Statement:

Aberya draws from archival photographs taken by Dean Worcester, whose images were used during the American colonial period. The racist "yardstick" photos shaped Western perceptions of indigenous peoples and Filipinos. These photographs contributed to the construction of exoticized and hierarchical representations that continue to influence how Filipino identities are imagined and portrayed. Through collage, the work disrupts these archival image by resembling digital glitches. The glitch functions as a gesture of error and resistance, exposing the biases embedded within colonial modes of representation.
