Kevin Roque

Artist Stament:

Aparisyon is a multimedia work activated through the projected image of Tara (female Buddha) using Pepper's ghost illusion technique, seated within what feels like her temple. The graphite drawing that fills the wall of the makeshift temple is a multiple-overlaid interpretation of the Agusan image, ranging from a Hindu Shaivite goddess and Buddhist Tara to the goddess Vajralāsyā of the Tantric Buddhist tradition and other animist deities. Accompanied by a looping chant that fills the room, it serves both as a spiritual space and a critique of colonial displacement. It is part of a broader repatriation project that aims to return Tara from the Field Museum to the community of Butuan in Mindanao.
